DISCIPLING TIPS
for 1-on-1 or small groups
Suggested Timelines and Uses:
- Forty weeks to cover forty chapters
- Four sessions, one session at a time for ten weeks
- Take eight weeks for a general overview, covering each priority in two weeks
- An individual discipleship study
- Forty topics and outlines for teachers or ministers
As you begin or continue to disciple others, here are a few tips that might be helpful:
- Tip #1 Pray that the Lord will lead you to the right people He has for you.
- Tip #2 You can meet one-to-one or in a small group.
- Tip #3 If meeting in a small group, make sure the people are compatible.
- Tip #4 Remember men meet with men -women meet with women - or meet as couples.
- Tip #5 The format for your time together could look like the following based upon 1 hour 15 minutes meeting:
- Share in a brief prayer to open the meeting.
- Share observations and comments from The Four Priorities chapter you are studying.
*Challenge people to find 1 application they will live out from each study.
- Share briefly your schedules (key events) for the week.
- Share briefly your relationships.
- Share briefly where you are now (stress points, good points, etc.).
- Close in prayer - 1 individual prays or all pray (if people are ready).
*Pray about things people shared in the time you have been together.
- Tip #6 As you select people to be in your group, have at least one person you personally challenged on the front end, to agree to start to reproduce.
- Tip #7 If you get questions you can't answer, tell them you'll get back to them next week with a response. (Call me!)
- Tip #8 Remember, you are developing friendships - so be a friend!
"Therefore go and make disciples ..." Matthew 28:19
YOU HAVE BEEN TRAINED WELL. IT IS TIME TO MOVE OUT!
My counsel for you is simple and straightforward: Just go ahead with what you've been given. You received Christ Jesus, the Master; now live Him. You're deeply rooted in Him. You're well-constructed upon Him. You know your way around the faith. Now do what you've been taught. School's out; quit studying the subject and start living it! And let your living spill over into thanksgiving. (taken from Colossians 2, The Message)
I can't wait to see what God is going to do through you!
Warmly in Christ,
John Tolson
